Created by best-selling author Crichton, this series centers on the medical personnel in the emergency room of a Chicago county hospital. ER tracks the inner workings of County General Hospital, where heroic doctors & nurses are faced with life-&-death decisions on a daily basis. In its 5th season, 3rd year med student, Lucy Knight joins the team in the ER & kindles a relationship with Dr. Carter, Dr. Corday starts her career over as an intern, Dr. Green watches helplessly as his family is torn apart, Dr. Ross leaves the ER for a new job & the whole time the ER is being run by an imposter!
It's always rush hour at the ER. Each day - each moment - brings new challenges, triumphs & losses. No one ever expected those losses would include 1 of County General's talented med students. The pell-mell ER rotation continues with Season 6. New stories unfold as young doctors face the day-in, day-out rigors of life-&-death decisions as a veteran physician faces a bittersweet conclusion to his career. Old stories resolve: Boulet finds love & family; Hathaway gives birth to twins & makes a decision fans have long awaited. & tragedy strikes - swiftly, irrevocably & for survivor Dr. John Carter, perhaps irreparably.
The gurneys keep rolling in a superlative season 7 that includes Abby's reunion with her mother, a turbulent woman who suffers from bipolar disorder. Also making the round: Carter returns from detox, Abby goes back to square one in med training; Benton struggles to emerge from Romano's doghouse, Kovac confronts a mugger, Weaver reveals her sexual orientation, & Chen refuses to reveal the father of her child. Meanwhile, Greene & Corday marry & live under the shadow of Greene's health crisis.
Season 8 was a time of big changes for the ER, with perhaps the biggest set of in-season transitions yet. Jing-Mei Chen is the new chief resident, but a bad call lands her & "Doctor Dave" Malucci in hot water & brings out the self-preserving worst in Kerry Weaver. Peter Benton finds himself with sole responsibility for deaf son Reese, & Mark Greene & Elizabeth Corday are already dealing with juggling their jobs, a brain tumor, & a newborn when Mark's teenage daughter Rachel arrives. John Carter is still chasing away ghosts, while Abby Lockhart & Luka Kovacs begin to have relationship problems. That seems to open the door for Carter & Abby, but then Dr. Susan Lewis returns & sets off sparks. In 1 of ER's famous inclement-weather episodes, Carter's grandmother though not fit to drive, does so, breaking her hip & hitting a young woman, while Weaver & medical student/Army reservist Michael Gallant try to save a pregnant stab victim in a wrecked, electrified ambulance.
Following the tumultuous cast changes of the 8h season, ER's 9th season was still an engaging drama, & began in rousing fashion which forces 1 doctor to make big adjustments. Corday returns from England but has difficulties on the job, especially when dealing with a new medical student who suffers from Parkinson's. Kovac engages in increasingly risky behavior, especially involving another new med student, Erin Harkins. Pratt strikes up a relationship with Chen, has difficulties with his brother Leon, & along with Gallant runs into trouble when a violent crime strikes Doc Magoo's diner. Romano proves a nightmare when he takes over the ER, & Weaver awaits parenthood & makes a strategic decision when she does a favor for a powerful local politician. Lewis befriends a terminal cancer patient & reveals a surprising relationship with a stranger. Carter & Abby finally launch into a relationship but have their own difficulties, like her mother & manic-depressive brother, before Carter joins Kovac in the season finale.
Few arrivals & departures in ER's long history were quite as spectacular as those in its 10th season. In the arrival department: new nurse Sam Taggart enters in almost superhuman fashion to take down a rogue patient, while other new faces include students Neela Rasgotra & residents Archie Morris & Nick "Coop" Cooper. In the departure department: Romano's response to a labor situation ushers out several stalwart characters, & then there's a military tank almost pushed the season straight over the top. Carter & Luka continue their adventures in Africa, & the former finds a love interest in Makemba "Kem" Likasu. Lewis befriends an architect losing his eyesight, Chen & Weaver suffer through difficult personal situations, Abby resumes medical school yet stays on as a nurse, & Pratt is accused of wrongdoing. Corday becomes head of surgery, & an incident of road rage provides the season-ending cliffhanger.
"ER" follows the lives of the emergency room staff & doctors of Chicago's County General Hospital, where the difference between life & death rests on split-second decisions--& the pressure, joy & guilt are often overwhelming. The heroic healers who live this life are as varied as the patients they treat. These medical professionals are determined to save lives in a place where nothing is taken for granted & nothing is certain...nothing except that another desperate person will be rushed through the emergency room doors in the next moment, in need of their help.
As a well-loved character left, a new arrived, & few more annoying than nurse manager Eve Payton & attending physician Victor Clemente. Eve promotes Sam & tries to get her to do her dirty work, while Clemente gets on everyone's nerves with his new procedures. Sam breaks up with Luka, who starts to show an interest in Abby, while Neela carries a torch for Gallant, off serving in the Iraq war. Clemente is revealed to have some skeletons in his closet, particularly in a woman named Jodie & her violent husband.
First things first: tying up the sensational cliffhanger from the previous season, in which a pregnant Abby was left bleeding on the ER floor & Sam & her annoying son, Alex, were abducted, leading to a deadly conclusion. Luka remains in limbo with the hospital board, & gets into more trouble when a carpenter named Curtis Ames has a stroke & sues him for malpractice. Tony Gates, joins the staff as an intern, Archie returns, & Weaver is demoted & later hangs on the edge of Luka's budget cuts. Gates is easy on the eyes & attracts the attention of the staff, especially Neela, but his life is complicated by a roommate who might be more than just a roommate, Meg, & her daughter, Sarah. Pratt struggles with his workload, volunteers at a church clinic, & also finds his brother going through a personal crisis. Struggling the most with Neela's interest in Gates is Ray, who finally explodes at a surprise party with devastating results.
Still 1 of the highest-rated dramas on television, ER continues to set pulses racing in its 14th season. The series centers on the medical staff of County General Hospital, where heroic doctors & nurses are faced with life-&-death decisions on a daily basis. Season 14 brings more conflict & more drama as the new Acting Chief faces off against his staff. & as Abby descends into alcoholism, only the return of Luka offers hope of redemption.
The final season of ER, the definitive medical drama of the '90s, found a way to wrap up its 15-season run without veering off the rails; moreover, it managed to bring back most of its famous alumni in guest appearances that didn't detract from the series' core. However, a longtime cast member dies in the very first episode of the season, which tells you everyone is still expendable. Abby Lockhart's exit reveals a nice tip of the hat to the cast's revolving door: a storage-closet wall where Nurse Haleh had been posting everyone's locker nameplates. Angela Bassett turns up as Catherine Banfield, the new chief of the ER, with a fraying marriage & a personal tragedy told in flashback--a clever device to bring back the series' linchpin Anthony Edwards, who played Dr. Mark Greene. Meanwhile, Tony & Sam 's new domestic life is torn apart by a tragic car accident; Neela finally makes a decision about her medical & romantic future; & John Carter returns for the second half of the season, with a medical condition & a strained marriage.
